How to Maximise Space and Accessibility in Your Medicinal Herb Garden using Vertical Gardening
For those of us passionate about natural remedies, having a medicinal herb garden is a dream. But what if space is limited, or mobility challenges make traditional gardening difficult? Enter vertical gardening – a brilliant solution that brings the garden closer, both literally and figuratively.
Why Vertical Gardening is Ideal for Accessibility
Traditional gardens often require bending, kneeling, and reaching, which can be challenging for individuals with mobility issues. Even though I'm decades from retirement age, I’m currently using crutches while I wait for two full hip replacements, meaning I have trouble getting up and down to/from a kneeling position. I also suffer arthritis and Raynauds disease, which affect my ability to grip. Vertical gardening has had a transformative impact on how I am going to be using my garden this year because it elevates plants, making them easier to tend and harvest. Here's why it's a game changer:
Reduced Strain: Raised planters and vertical systems minimize bending and kneeling, reducing strain on joints and backs.
Improved Accessibility: Plants are at a comfortable height, making them easier to reach for watering, pruning, and harvesting.
Space Optimization: Vertical gardens utilize vertical space, making them perfect for balconies, patios, and small yards.
Customizable Heights: You can tailor the height of your vertical garden to your specific needs, ensuring comfortable access.
Reduced Pest Issues: Elevated plants are often less susceptible to ground-dwelling pests.
Choosing the Right Vertical Gardening System
Several vertical gardening systems are available, each with its own advantages. I have started with a bit of a pick and mix of all but the hydroponics:
Wall-Mounted Planters: These are ideal for small spaces and can be arranged at various heights. Consider self-watering options for easier maintenance.
Tiered Planters: These create a cascading effect, maximizing space and adding visual appeal. Look for sturdy designs with good drainage.
Hanging Baskets: Perfect for herbs that trail or require less support, such as mint or thyme. Ensure they are hung at a comfortable height.
Pocket Gardens: Fabric or felt pockets attached to a vertical surface offer a flexible and lightweight option.
Pallet Gardens: Repurposed pallets can be transformed into vertical gardens, providing a rustic and cost-effective solution. Ensure the pallet is food safe and sturdy
Hydroponic Systems: While a more advanced system, hydroponics can make gardening very accessible, and minimise bending. I will be collaborating with my brother on an article specifically about Hydroponics because he has extensive knowledge of the process gained whilst researching medical marijuana for Health Canada.

Medicinal Herbs Perfect for Vertical Gardens
Many medicinal herbs thrive in vertical gardens. Here are a few accessible and useful options:
Mint: Soothing for digestive issues. Actually best in planters to avoid it taking over.
Thyme: Versatile cooking herb with antiseptic properties.
Rosemary: Stimulates circulation and improves memory.
Lavender: Calming and relaxing, perfect for stress relief.
Chamomile: Soothes nerves and aids sleep.
Aloe Vera: Succulent with soothing properties for burns and skin irritations.
Calendula part of the Marigold family: Great for skin healing and inflammation

Tips for Success
Choose the Right Location: Select a spot with adequate sunlight and good drainage.
Use Quality Soil: Opt for a well-draining potting mix specifically formulated for containers.
Water Regularly: Vertical gardens tend to dry out faster, so consistent watering is crucial.
Consider Self Watering or drip systems: These systems can make watering much easier.
Fertilize Appropriately: Provide your herbs with the nutrients they need to thrive.
Provide Support: Some herbs, like rosemary, may require support as they grow.
Ergonomic Tools: Invest in gardening tools with ergonomic handles to minimize strain.
